Blue skies, fluffy white clouds hanging fat and lazy in the air, verdant green grasses and trees heavy with lush foliage, the air thick with the heat of summer just around the corner.  If you want to put a date to it; summer in the UK officially starts June 1st and ends August 31st. And as we all know summer is the best time for a picnic!  So with long, hot, lazy days ahead (we hope) you are probably wondering which are the best parks for a summer picnic in London!

London has probably got more green spaces than any other large city in the world; awash with exotic gardens, manicured squares, flambouyant royal parks; parks steeped in history and hidden green spaces, sometimes in the most unlikely of places.  Make the most of the Open Garden Squares Weekend this summer 11-12 June 2011 and discover the diverse delights of London’s Secret Gardens.

An illustrious list; Hampstead Heath, Hyde Park, Green Park, St James’s Park, Regent’s Park, Battersea Park, Waterlow Park, Victoria Embankment Gardens, Victoria Tower Gardens, Jubilee Gardens, Buckingham Palace Gardens, Battersea Park – the list goes on, and on top of that, with Squares galore dotted around the city, you have a marvellous array of parks and gardens both large and small.

Unfortunately some of them, like Buckingham Palace Gardens for instance are private and can only be accessed via the summer tours, and Open House in September, or if you are lucky enough to be invited; The Queens’ Summer Garden Party.   Others are accessible during Open Garden Squares Weekend 11-12 June 2011 – weekend ticket £10 or £7.50 in advance. Children under 12 Free.

But, don’t be disappointed; we have dozens of parks where you can take a packed lunch basket, bring a tartan blanket or two, hire a green and white striped deck chair for an hour or so, and spread yourself out on lovely green lawns for a summer picnic. As we go, I will list 5 places that I think are the best parks for a picnic, why you should go there, what you could see while you are there, and best of all……..all are free to enter!

In the meantime think about what would you would pack to make up a fabulous picnic hamper!
